I’ve been installing and configuring home theaters and media systems, both consumer and industrial for over 15 years in a professional /personal capacity. I’ve gone from Dolby Stereo/ Surround to 7.1 digital. I’ve installed and had many different speakers and components over the years. I bought this because it was time to downsize and get an easier to use system (got married- wife acceptance factor). I’ve never even considered a HIB before, until I saw that Onkyo and Lucas Film’s THX got together to design/manufacture the first THX HIB. I took a chance with this and I’m very happy I did.

The speaker cabinets are real wood, rare in a HIB system. They are well built and sound fantastic for the price. Having replaced much higher end/larger speakers with the included speakers it was not as dramatic a change as I would have thought. The S9100 speakers are accurate and create tight soundstage that is not fatiguing over long listening sessions. Again, rare for a HIB.

The receivers is well endowed in the newer hardware technology and included surround formats, again, quite cutting edge for the price. The GUI is easy to use and quite straightforward, coming from the dawn of receiver GUI to modern GUI with too many settings to tweak it’s a refreshing change, everything you need with no minute settings to pour over thanks to the included Audyssey system. I have no regrets in having this system in my home. I really can’t see how you can go wrong with this system for what the list price is.

All I can say is Wow! worthy every penny paid! When I was buying this unit a month ago my hopes were not that high, I expected same HTIB sound system, well the system proved me wrong. You will not be disappointed. Currently hooked to PS3 so have not yet tested DTS HD Master Audio and DD HD since PS3 does not support Bitstream out.

You can buy a better system by purchasing individual pieces but if you are starting from scratch this is a pretty nice system. Speakers have a good sound. They do not have as much bass as floor speakers but still sound nice and give clean accurate sound. Some of the setups are a little confusing and it took some time to calibrate the speakers. Movies sound great and it has enough hookups for a lot of applications.

Easy to setup. Wonderful expressive sound. The opening aria in Phantom of the Opera is a joy; the snarl of the exhaust as the Hudson Hornet revs up to race Lightning in Cars is menacingly potent. The temper tantrum of the King Bear in The Golden Compass is convincingly powerful and the tinkle of his discarded goblet as it travels across the sound stage and disappears to the right draws the viewer breathlessly into the story.

The quality of the speakers is very good, the 12” woofer delivers the low notes with precision. The receiver has many, many switching and sound shaping options.

All in all a great buy, all put together in one neat package.
