Onkyo Delivers World's First 6.1-Channel Home Theater in a Box

07/19/02 - "Home Theater in a Box" has become one of the fastest growing and most popular ways for consumers to enjoy DVD movies and other video, but unfortunately these systems usually combine simplicity with only the most basic level of features and ability. Now Onkyo has introduced the 6.1-channel HT-S755DVC system, countering the conventional industry notion that serious home theater doesn't come in a package. A powerful Surround-EX A/V receiver, five-disc progressive scan DVD changer, and full seven-piece speaker package are included. The system is compatible with the most advanced multichannel sound formats, providing a center rear surround channel for additional realism. Onkyo believes this is the industry's first 6.1-channel HTiB. The heart of the HT-S755DVC is a 6.1-channel A/V receiver that delivers 105 Watts per channel into the included 6-Ohm speaker package, and features Dolby Digital-EX, DTS-ES, and Dolby ProLogic II compatibility. A vast array of input and output connections are included, so the system can be expanded easily, and the unit even includes upscale digital-to-analog converters and HDTV-capable component video switching to produce audio and video quality that rivals high-end receivers with twice the price tag. The receiver's amplifier section features Onkyo's WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) for an extended frequency response of 10Hz – 100 kHz, and power stages which use all-discrete output devices for high-current capability. The included five-disc DVD changer can handle DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, VCDs, and even MP3-encoded discs. Progressive scan component video output and high quality 192 kHz/24-bit DACs provide superb video and audio reproduction. Four-disc play exchange capability allows discs to be swapped in and out of the carousel without interrupting playback. The supplied speaker package includes six two-way satellite speakers and a 150-Watt down-firing powered subwoofer for deep bass reproduction. The front left/right speakers feature dual 5-1/4-inch woofers in a D'Appolito array, while the magnetically-shielded center channel uses a pair of 4-inch woofers. Left, right, and center surrounds all feature a single 4-inch woofer and are matched to produce an enveloping surround soundfield. All six speakers feature high efficiency 1-inch balanced dome tweeters, extensively braced MDF cabinets, and an attractive universal Black Oak finish. Onkyo has also introduced three systems which are built around a 5 x 100 Watt Dolby Digital and DTS-capable receiver. The base system is the HT-S650, which includes the receiver and six-piece satellite-subwoofer speaker package. The HT-S653DV and HT-S655DVC add a single-disc DVD player and the five-disc DVD changer respectively to the base package. Installation and setup of all the Onkyo home theater packages is fast and simple, with color-coded speaker cables and terminals. On-screen and front-panel displays provide for easy and intuitive set-up, and a full-function preprogrammed remote controls all the action. The HT-S755DVC will be available in September, 2002 at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $999. The HT-S650 and HT-S655DVC are currently available at a suggested retail prices of $499 and $799 respectively. The HT-S653DV will be available in August, 2002 with suggested retail price of $699.
